Ask Me!: The perfect Actors Access submission

I’ve been submitting through Actor’s Access for about a year, and haven’t been getting many auditions through it.  Do you have any advice on how to leave a good cover note, or any tips for boosting my online profile?
I’ve been trying to book student films to create a reel, but haven’t had success.
Thank you!!

These days, castings through actors access are about your headshot and reel, and how well you fit the description/breakdown.

If those are lacking in any way then they could be holding you back from getting auditions.

Make sure that your submission material is up to date and showcasing you in the best possible light.

Make sure you are submitting yourself to the roles you are perfect for. If they’re looking for a He-man lookalike and you look like Bill Gates… well. You’re not gonna get called. Period. It’s not a judgement on you, nor is it a reflection on how backwards the industry is. Casting is very specific, and unless the casting director is actively looking to turn the casting on it’s head (and they’ll let you know in the breakdown if this is true) you are just wasting your time by trying to submit yourself for something you are ill-suited to.

As far as cover letters go less is always more. Try not to beg for a role. I’ve found actually that I have had better luck by not submitting a note at all! I just let my work, picture, and resume do the talking. Of course there are times where a cover letter has been important, but I usually try to say as little as possible and encourage them to contact me for more info if they need it.

The casting process is generally like this: Looks at picture, does this look like the right fit? If no, buh-bye. If yes, then resume is next. Has this person done anything with anyone I may know (school, previous experience)? If no, then have they done anything at all? If no, buh-bye. If yes then is there any video or perhaps a review (in the case of theater)? And so on and so forth. Until the casting director feels like they have enough proof that this actor could be the right fit. It’s quite straight-forward and it’s all done very quickly. It doesn’t matter how amazing your cover letter is, if you don’t look right for the part they won’t see you.

I hope that helps.
