Ask Me!: How to diversify my resume?

Anonymous asked: I was the one that asked about if it too early to go after paid work even though I did 4 films that I did with friends. Meaning will agents and CDS be turned off by this? Like wouldnt they wanna see me work with doifferent people.

The more work you have on your resume the better. And the more diverse your resume the better, too.

Of course agents and casting directors like to see that you have experience, but they also know talent when they see it. And there are many who like to discover new talent. So don’t be intimidated by the idea that your resume isn’t up to snuff. Your job is to start putting yourself out there as much as you can (Actors Access, Backstage, Casting Networks, etc.) and get to work building your resume on your own. Eventually you will book something because you will be the only person for the job. They won’t care what’s on your resume. Trust me. It happened to me.

On another note there is a little trick you can do to make your resume look a little more diverse in the beginning. And that is to change up the way you list your jobs.

For example:

Let’s say I have done four sketch videos with my friends. One guy wrote them and a different guy directed them. On paper it might look like this –

A Bad Idea                  Einstein         Dir. Judd Apatow

Fillings                          Norbert        Dir. Judd Apatow

Some like it Cold      Marilyn         Dir. Judd Apatow

Death by Twix           Twix               Dir. Judd Apatow

Just change up the writer and director –

A Bad Idea                Einstein          Dir. Judd Apatow

Fillings                       Norbert          Writer. Charlie Kaufman

Some like it Cold     Marilyn          Dir. Judd Apatow

Death by Twix          Twix                Writer. Charlie Kaufman

You can even make up a production company name if there isn’t one already –

A Bad Idea                Einstein         Dir. Judd Apatow

Fillings                        Norbert         Writer. Charlie Kaufman

Some like it Cold     Marilyn         Dir. Judd Apatow

Death by Twix          Twix               Prod. Big Fat BLTs

There. You can see I’ve already made my resume look a little better (I’m being facetious by using famous peoples names, so obviously don’t lie about that). Just tell the truth but spread it out a bit.

Eventually you will be able to take the less than perfect credits and replace them with good credits, but you have to start somewhere.

I hope that addresses your concerns a little better.
