Name your Headshot and Resume files!

I just had a brief stint casting a project and what was curious to me was how many actors had their headshot and resume files incorrectly named. And even incorrectly formatted.

You have to think for a moment that when you submit yourself to a project that a given casting director is receiving a lot of pix on their desktop. If your file is called “NewHeadshot_2/13.jpg” then it’s highly likely the casting director isn’t going to find it when he/she needs it.

This is how I recommend labelling your files:

Headshot – “YourName.JPG”

Resume – “YourNameResume.PDF”

Also notice the formatting. All photos should be jpgs. It’s the most universal format for photographs and therefore more likely to be opened by a large number of people. All resumes should be pdfs. Again, the most universal format for documents and can be opened with a number of applications. Don’t send your resume as a word doc. Word is a great application but it can be very finnicky from one computer to another. For example word X doesn’t like forward or backward slashes in it’s titles, so if you use one the chances are the file will not open for another user. To save your word doc as a PDF on a mac follow these directions: Open doc in Word – > file – > print – > (in the print window you’ll see a PDF button)  PDF – > save as PDF – > name your file appropriately and make sure it’s saving to your desired destination. (FYI, you will usually find the PDF function button in the print window.)

A simple solution to help ensure your files are received, viewed AND stored in the best way possible.
