i have no acting experience but i have plenty of connection some how. they all ask what classes have you taken but every time i look for classes its all intensives and stuff like that. Where do i start with out spending all my money? thanks

Sorry to break it to you, but if you don’t have any experience as an actor and you’re serious about becoming one, then you are going to have to nestle in to some long-term training. And that’s going to cost you money.

Of course you can look for classes like scene-study classes, those are usually about 8 weeks to 3 months in length, and depending on the teacher, they can be really good in getting you started and, if you’re a pro,  keeping you limber. But if you truly want to go from being a novice to a pro, you are going to have to sign up for one of those longer-term deals. I believe the Atlantic has a great program, so does Stella Adler, Maggie Flanigan, William Esper, and many more.

Of course there are a number of scam classes that lure you in with the prospect of industry, but unless you are being trained by a great teacher, there is only so much you are going to grow.

So. Where do you start?

I’m not a big fan of this school, but if you’re looking to start small, why not sign up for scene-study with HB studios? Better, I think my old scene-study teacher Richard Scanlon is still teaching. You can look into that, too. He is a great teacher and he’ll be able to give you some good advice on where you need to go next. Otherwise, if I were you, I would suck it up and sign up for something longer term at any of the previous schools I mentioned. It’s going to be tough on your wallet, but think of it as a long-term investment in your career.
