I am doing background work at the moment, is it best to do a lot of it even stuff not in NYC?

It depends.

I would say do as much of it as you want to and if it is exciting/inspiring to you. But, I should tell you that extra work basically never leads to anything else. It’s good resume-building stuff, but this idea people have of being discovered by the director because of the great background work is absurd. Not to diminish the work of the great many professional background workers out there, extra work is literally related to art-direction and lighting. It’s about creating a backdrop for the movie to take place. Sometimes you can find a way to stand out from the crowd as an extra, but in my opinion I would say that if you do that, you are not doing your job!

So. Keep doing the extra work as long as you are proactively working on your career outside of it and as long as it does not interfere with the auditions an agent/casting director might call you in for.
