Does voiceover pay well?

It depends.

I’ve made $0 and I’ve made $8,000 for a recording. And it’s possible to make more.

The first was early days where I did a non-union audiobook for someone who said they’d pay me on the back end once the book was released. I spent 8 hours in a tiny, boiling hot booth being over-directed and taken advantage of. I was never paid – nor did I ever hear anything about the book or the writer/director again.

The second was for a union commercial that ran in the UK had a number of different versions. It took an hour to record and was a great time.

There are no real guidelines in the non-union sector.

There are official union rates which you can look at over on the Voiceover Resource guide for reference but these are also up for negotiation (but are the base-line figures) if you are a name or have any clout in the industry.

Overall you can make a good living as a voiceover artist if you know where to find the jobs. But it’s not guaranteed that you’ll make any money at them if you are working outside of the union.
