Bad Teacher!

If you are a teacher (in any field) and you cannot explain what it is you are teaching, you should NOT BE A TEACHER IN THAT SUBJECT.

If you don’t understand what it is you are trying to educate others in, or you do understand but lack the ability/desire to communicate it, then you have no right demanding money from students looking to you to help them understand.

We demand that our teachers in mechanics, law, medicine, science, even fine art and music know what they are teaching. But, for whatever reason, when it comes to the performing arts there is elasticity around how much information our educators should have.

Being a good performer is not a mystery and any good teacher knows that. Anyone who cannot explain to you how to do what they do as an educator is a fraud and they should not be teaching – especially not at an advanced level. And, I’m not just talking about “acting” classes either. This mentality is rampant in any category of the performing arts including improv, voice, clown, alternative dance, etc.

A teacher who tells you that “acting cannot be taught,” for example, should be avoided like the plague. Take your money to someone who actually cares about creating new talent.

One Response to “Bad Teacher!”

  1. I believe they should move over and make way for those of us who love what we do, continue to learn about it and have a passion for wanting to share it with others who are willing to learn.
