Q: Do you think someone who is submitting for film and tv roles who have no experience in theater get looked down on by casting directors etc?
A: Hey there,
Well, it is unfortunately one of those things that is partly true.
However, a lot of very well-known film and TV stars have absolutely no theater experience and they’re doing just fine.
I think, however, that more than theater work, casting directors will look to training above all else. If you have a great school on your resume you’ll have a better chance of being called in to audition for good jobs – especially if you don’t have much reel to go on.
But, as long as you’re focused on making your craft as good as it can be, don’t let things like that hold you back.
I don’t have a very good educational resume at all and I don’t believe I’d ever get hired based solely on that piece of paper. Luckily, I have fortified myself with a pretty decent reel and that helps people forget about all those other things I’m “supposed” to have.
So do your best to be as good an actor as you can, put yourself in classes and other good networking environments, make your own work and see what happens!
