Ask Me!: Get SAG card before moving to NYC?

Anonymous asked
I want to move to NYC from Atlanta,Ga. The acting here is ok but I really want a shot at the industry at its finest! Should I get my SAG card here first, or can I waite and just go to NYC without it?

It depends on what kind of work you have done. If you need to build your resume, I’d recommend just getting here and tapping into the HUGE non-union field. There’s so much work available and you’ll start making connections immediately.

If, however, you already have a pretty good reel and a number of credits on your resume, it may be easier to get your card in Georgia (please cross reference this statement!). It can be a tricky process getting one in NYC as the market is saturated.

Overall though, my philosophy is that if you want to move to NYC and you feel like this is where you need to be to do what you want then don’t wait for anything. Just get here and trust that you’re making the right choice. The SAG card and other union cards will follow with the work.

Good luck!
