Anecdotes on the job: They’re listening!

I was recently doing a little background work. I had been placed on a street corner with another lady and we were standing in one spot take after take. I started to get a sore back about an hour (or lets say 5 takes) into the second to last scene of the 10-hour day. It was late, the sun was fading, people were beginning to get silly. I discovered that if I, in between takes, crouched down into a squat it relieved my aches. This was an unfortunate discovery on my part primarily because anything that can peak my scatological sense of humorwill.

My “scene partner” made a joke about being embarrassed that I was taking a poop in public and we launched into what can only be described as a two-person scene about an incompetent receptionist who defecates in the wrong places. Well, we were in hysterics at every moment, barely holding it together during each take. At one point, just as the humor turned exceptionally blue during one of the takes and as we were crying with the giggles the sound guy gently sidled up to us and said “Um… this mic pretty much stays on throughout the shoot.. and… well, it happens to have been pointing in the direction of you two for the last few minutes… aaaannnndddd… ” he looked at us with the most mischievous, side-smile “everyone on this set can hear what you’re talking about.. “ He took a moment to enjoy the absolute horror that spread rapidly to my face as I DIED with embarrassment.
